Jazz in St. Louis has been shaping the city’s musical identity for more than a century, and it continues to inspire musicians and audiences today. As a band that performs regularly in the region, we feel incredibly lucky to be part of a community that keeps this music alive through live performance, collaboration, and a deep love for the tradition.
The story of jazz in St. Louis is not just history. It is something you can still hear every week in clubs, theaters, and concert halls throughout the city.
The Roots of Jazz in St. Louis

The foundation of jazz in St. Louis goes back to the ragtime era of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Legendary composer Scott Joplin helped establish the city as one of the most important musical centers in America during that time.
Because St. Louis sits along the Mississippi River, it became a natural meeting point for traveling musicians. Sounds from New Orleans, Chicago, and other cities flowed through the region, creating a rich blend of musical ideas that helped shape early jazz.
Several influences helped build the tradition of jazz in St. Louis:
• Riverboats and traveling musicians bringing new styles to the city
• Dance halls and theaters where early jazz bands performed
• A strong ragtime piano tradition led by composers like Scott Joplin
• Musical exchange between St. Louis, New Orleans, and Chicago
Over time these influences helped jazz in St. Louis develop its own voice, one built on rhythm, improvisation, and musical storytelling.
Why Jazz in St. Louis Still Thrives
One of the most exciting things about jazz is that it is never exactly the same twice. Improvisation is at the heart of the music. Musicians respond to each other in real time, building on ideas and shaping the direction of a song together.
That sense of spontaneity is why live jazz remains so powerful.
The St. Louis jazz community continues to grow because of the people who support it. Musicians, educators, venue owners, and listeners all play a role in keeping the tradition moving forward.
Jazz in St. Louis continues to thrive thanks to:
• A passionate community of professional musicians
• Strong music education programs throughout the region
• Venues that support live jazz performance
• Audiences who love the experience of live music
For many of us who perform regularly, this sense of community is one of the most rewarding parts of being a jazz musician in St. Louis.
Hearing Jazz in St. Louis Live
The best way to truly experience jazz in St. Louis is to hear it live. Recordings can capture the music, but nothing compares to being in the room as musicians interact and shape the sound together.
That is exactly why we love performing at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center. It has become a wonderful home for live jazz where audiences can sit back, listen closely, and enjoy the conversation happening between musicians on stage.
Confluence Jazz performs there every other Tuesday, and each show features a guest jazz vocalist from the St. Louis music community. These performances celebrate the classic jazz repertoire while leaving plenty of room for improvisation and musical surprises.
We are excited about several upcoming performances in the series:
• Tuesday, March 24 featuring vocalist Miz Renee Smith
• Tuesday, April 7 featuring vocalist Meghan Kirk
• Tuesday, April 21 featuring vocalist Erin Bode
Each of these vocalists brings their own personality and style to the music, which makes every performance unique. Sharing the stage with talented singers like these is one of the highlights of performing jazz in St. Louis.
The Kirkwood Performing Arts Center and the Jazz Experience

The Kirkwood Performing Arts Center provides an ideal setting for live jazz. The room allows audiences to hear the details that make jazz so compelling, from a quiet piano phrase to the subtle interaction between bass and drums.
When musicians are truly listening to each other, the music becomes a conversation. A melody might shift direction, a solo might grow in unexpected ways, and the entire band reacts in real time.
That is what makes live jazz special. No two performances are ever exactly the same.
For audiences, this creates a listening experience that feels personal and alive. For musicians, it is what keeps us coming back to the stage night after night.
Looking Ahead for Jazz in St. Louis
Jazz has always been a music that respects tradition while welcoming new ideas. Musicians study the great artists who came before them, then bring their own voice into the music.
In St. Louis, younger musicians continue to learn from experienced players while adding their own creativity and perspective. That cycle keeps the music evolving while still honoring the roots that shaped it.
Because of that balance, jazz in St. Louis remains an important part of the city’s cultural life.
And for those of us who get to perform it, being part of that tradition is incredibly rewarding.
